Media Catchall Post, Third Quarter
I can't believe there are only three more months in the year! Anyway, I watched a bit more these past few months than I have done in a lot of these posts, in part because of watching things while visiting friends and in part because of housesitting.
Music
Just about nothing new this summer, or at least nothing that's stuck! I have been listening to some from the Crane Wives, though, I am particularly fond of "Ribs." Right now, I'm music directing Once Upon a Mattress, so that soundtrack is looping in my head more often than not.
Movies
Several of these! I finally watched the Peter Dinklage Cyrano from last year, which I enjoyed but wasn't as head-over-heels in love with as I wish I could have been. Weirdly for me, the scene with the soldiers singing before their likely deaths was both the most memorable scene and song for me, as opposed to the romance-related things, which are usually the parts of that story I'm interested in. I did The Lost City, the Bullock/Tatum romcom from this past winter, which was a JOY and made me laugh several times, absolutely delightful. The Sea Beast and Jungle Cruise were both housesitting watches: the former I liked a lot except that the beast animations didn't really work for me and the latter just mosty felt soulless, though there was a canonically gay character (a two-second not-quite-explicit confirmation, to be clear, I'm not giving Disney too much credit here) who I enjoyed and wished the movie were about. Not sure if I should count this one, but I watched an adaptation of Allerleirauh, a beloved and sadly underadapted tale ... in unsubtitled German, a language I do not speak. There were things going on that I suspect I would have liked a lot if I'd understood them, alas, and even more alas, it seems to be part of a series of similar tales, none of which are available anywhere I can find them legally, much less subtitled (with the exception of a Goose Girl I watched a while ago, where in the subtitled version on youtube the last ten minutes are cut off so you have to go find the unsubtitled version and watch the end without the benefit of understanding). ANYWAY, last movie in this period was Netflix romcom Love in the Villa, which was bad.
TV Shows
A few of these as well! A few quick housesitting watches, to start. First, season two of The Quest, a portal fantasy reality competition that's changed a lot in season two, in some ways good (nobody gets eliminated!), some ways neutral (now it's teens rather than adults), and some ways weaker (way more focus on NPCs to the point that they might as well have just made an original fantasy show). Then, for a drastic change of pace, How to Build a Sex Room, which was for the most part remarkably charming, though I can't imagine actually taking part in the show myself, were I a sex room person. I watched season 2 of Only Murders in the Building, which I continue to enjoy, and the most recent season of Taskmaster, which was as always a joy. Currently I'm in the middle of three shows: the currently airing seasons of The Great British Bake-Off (I still miss Mel and Sue and Mary Berry) and Abbott Elementary, and M*A*S*H, which I mostly enjoy despite period-typical things.
D&D
I said last time that we might finish up while I was visiting my friends, but alas, while we played lots of fun D&D while I was visiting, we ended up finishing just about a month later, with an epic adventure (after the Astral Sea) into the dark side of the Feywild to hunt down a guy who had incapacitated a god. There were very badass moments for everyone concerned, and my bard got to strike the killing blow on the villain, much to my delight! We've even had a chance for some epilogue times, and to ask the DM some of the questions they couldn't answer while we were playing and they had to be mysterious. There will, someday soon, almost certainly be fic, but for now I am basking in the campaign's ending and bereft at the same time! It will probably be 2-3 of these posts before I'm playing in a game again, though over the winter I'm hoping to run a mini-campaign.
Other
While visiting my friends, watched some Dropout content, I really enjoy their things and am planning to subscribe myself soon, I think, there are just a lot of things I want to watch! When the current campaign of their D&D show ends, I think that will decide me, because I want to watch that, but really only if things end happily. On Youtube, I've added RetroClaude to my watches, because I'm finding her current umbrella project of using her yarn stash satisfying. Other than that, nothing else new!
Creative Projects
I had two big fiber projects over the summer. One is a summer top that I am about 85% happy with, which isn't bad, considering it's only the second proper garment I've made. I hand-sewed all the buttonholes, which I'm very proud of myself for! The other is a shawl I wove myself--I wish it were about a foot longer, but it was what I had time for and what I had warping space for, so I'll live with it being a bit short. There's a picture of that in this tumblr post. For writing, I've been working on a novel for much of this year! The writing has been, for me, frustratingly slow, but I'm getting really close to the end now, and I'm trying not to be down on myself for not writing 1500-2000 words a day, which I can do when there's not a pandemic but have a lot more trouble with givcen *gestures* the state of the world.
Things I'm Looking Forward To
A lot of what I was looking forward to last time remains, unfortunately, on the list. I'm just not very good at watching things! Other than those, the Dropout shows I want to do are definitely things I'm looking forward to. I've got a dress I've been wanting to make for ages but keep putting off because the materials are a bit more expensive than my general preference. Once I finish my current novel, I have D&D fic and Yuletide fic that I want to write, and of course other original projects too, there are always a hundred of those I want to try!
