2025 Media Catchall Post, First Quarter

Can't believe the year's already a quarter of the way done! It hasn't been great, but we persevere, I guess, and that does mean that I've been consuming some media, at least.

Music

I'm keeping up texting songs of the week back and forth with one of my sisters, and my playlist for that features Chappell Roan (specifically "School Nights"), "Hawk for the Dove" by Amanda Shire, and a flashback to "Human" by the Killers, among others. Definitely in my sad song era, not shocking given the state of the world.

Movies

I have watched, according to my records, precisely one movie in the last three months! It was a rewatch of Muppet Treasure Island when I got my wrist injury and needed some comfort viewing.

TV Shows

On the other hand, been doing lots of these! Continuing to watch a lot of rescue shows and a lot of murder mysteries. For ongoing shows, I'm watching Abbott Elementary (less patience with this one every season, unfortunately), Animal Control (though that season is now over), Antiques Roadshow, Doctor Odyssey (a bit less fun in its post-hiatus era, but I have hopes it will pick up again), and 9-1-1 (finished my catchup on that in late January and now am watching post-hiatus, and I'm actually having rather a marvelous time keeping up with such an active fandom while the show is airing, been a while since I did that). For full seasons/shows that I've watched, I did the new season of All Creatures Great and Small (just really consistently lovely), all of 9-1-1: Lone Star (not as good as 9-1-1, largely because it's less of an ensemble piece and more focused on Captain Rob Lowe, who I didn't particularly enjoy; plus, can't believe I had to suffer through TWO cancer plots), s3 of Murder She Wrote (continuing to be fun and charming), Moonflower Murders (followup to Magpie Murders and also very fun), The Marlow Murder Club (a charming delight), and most recently The Residence (kickass as a piece of art, politically ... messy, let's say). Phew! Oh, and I've watched a couple episodes of Rescue: Hi-Surf but I'm not sure how long that will stick with me, the rescues are all kind of same-y.

Other

Not a great deal here! A lot of my regular youtubers haven't been doing a ton of videos that particularly interest me. On Dropout, I've watched the recent season of Make Some Noise and caught up on last season of Smartypants just in time to get behind on the new season of Smartypants.

D&D

Let's see, where did I leave you? Ah, the space shuttle rescue. That was followed by a murder mystery at a country house party where the victim was one of the gatekeepers of the Nine Hells (my hells are very different than the canonical D&D ones, because I am who I am), because one thing about me as a DM is that I WILL make my players do adventures in all my favorite genres. Now we are doing an interesting narrative thing where we've set ourselves up so one of the characters has to be away from the others for a year, which means we've done some solo adventures where players play NPCs for each other so they get to still participate (one of them rescued Fantasy Taylor Swift from being killed by sirens who thought she was their prophesied queen and went on a date with her, the other had to lay some shades to rest in a ghost hospital, the genre whiplash was wild), and also to maintain connections yeeted them into some relationship drama with bonus cultural misunderstandings that promptly ate 2-3 episodes. Presently they're dealing with some Shakespearean drama on the Elemental Plane of Air and the paladin ended up SAINTED, which is a thing I was planning on happening but not for like 5 more levels, but I guess that's what a clutch nat 20 at the exact right moment will get you??? Anyway that happened yesterday and I'm still shook about it.

Creative Projects

Writing: still stranded in the edit I've been working on since last year but I've just come up for air after a fic wrote itself so I'm going to be getting back to it as of today. Wrote two 9-1-1 fics, though, one silly little 10k romcom and one 70k canon divergence AU angst monster that I wrote at NaNo pace because I needed a distraction from everything sucking (the latter is posting in chunks as a WIP, so according to the AO3 it's not complete but according to me it is!). Sewing: continuing to make slow progress on my Tortall map, currently doing text, though I haven't actually embroidered since I think late January because February sucked and March was a bad time with my wrist injury. I'll have to get back to it! I also sewed a skirt (map-themed fabric), and just the other day sewed a mock-up of a blouse pattern I got for Christmas. Other: a friend of mine has been super into linocut lately and on inauguration day we and a couple other people got together to do some linocut, so that was fun! I'm not nearly as good as he us, but he's a professional artist so that's not exactly shocking.

Things I'm Looking Forward To

Well, after yesterday's sainthood session, I'm very much looking forward to D&D! I'm also excited to use that blouse pattern to use up a couple fabrics I've had sitting around waiting for it for a while, and to finishing my edit so I can decide what my next original project is, whether I'm going to first draft something or dig into another edit for my space series. (I know which I ought to do but I also know which is more likely. We'll see!) Media-wise, excited to continue with my rescue shows, and maybe get back to watching some Dimension 20? Also there's a good amount of Farscape on youtube these days, I think, and I've been meaning to watch that for ages.

And that's all for now! Next update at the end of June.

Ooh, I saw a trailer recently for Marlow Murder Club, and it looked fun!

A map-themed skirt sounds really cool.

Nothing like making things to distract from the awful :)
