Dear Author,

Yuletide season is always a wonderful time of year! Thank you so much for offering to write one of my beloved small fandoms, and I look forward to seeing whatever you choose to write. Feel free to depart from my given prompts if you've got an idea you've been hoping to write, too, but if you're a prompt person I hope these ones are useful!

If you wish to find me elsewhere I am [archiveofourown.org profile] lady_ragnell and [tumblr.com profile] theladyragnell. If you are here thinking about treats, I'm very delighted that my prompts inspired you so much, and I have gifts enabled!

General Likes and Dislikes

Likes
  • Stories about relationships, be they romantic or platonic! I love banter, characters playing off of each other, relationships that feel lived-in. I also love relationships growing and changing, and stories about the moments where they shift! That can mean a shift from friends (or enemies or rivals or indifferent strangers) to lovers, or a growth in trust or respect in gen relationships.
  • Happy or hopeful endings! I am perfectly happy with a lot of angst along the way, but I like to leave a story knowing that the characters are going to be okay.
  • AUs, especially of the canon-adjacent kind (canon divergences and fix-its, roleswaps, things like that), but setting change AUs are also delightful! Putting a canon in space is always a delight, and I am also very fond of things like You've Got Mail AUs and other romcom fusions.
  • Worldbuilding! I haven't requested it specifically, but anything you want to fit in is great, I love it when fics focus in on details of worldbuilding canons didn't have time to do much with and extrapolate them out, or quote from in-universe media or mythology.
  • Off that last one, I love epistolary fic (particularly if you'd like to do epistolary for Dracula), and other found documents types of stories: letters, journals, recordings, voicemails, logs, anything of that nature is wonderful.
  • Any rating, G to E, wherever you are most comfortable writing, from gen to non-porny romance to porn (though I would prefer porn as garnish to other things rather than PWP, and for any younger characters to be aged up to 18+).
  • Assorted tropes and story elements I am fond of include: any and all marriage tropes (arranged, convenient, Vegas, fake), found family, hurt/comfort with lots of comfort (especially in survival situations and the classic "overworked to the point of fainting"), time travel tropes (going back to fix things, time loops, etc), anything about loyalty or fealty, pining, banter, dancing or Fancy Party Episodes, political/court intrigue, outsider POV (preferably from canon characters), and epistolary.
  • Assorted things I enjoy in porn, should you choose that route, include: non-penetrative sex (penetrative is also fine! But I very much enjoy oral, frottage, etc.), characters having fun and laughing during sex, light informal d/s or bondage (particularly if partners switch off who's in charge), sex pollen in any of the space canons, phone sex or dirty talk (though I prefer the latter not be humiliation-related).

Dislikes

Overall, I am fine with these elements up to and including the level they're at in a canon, but don't like them introduced, pushed further, or focused on:
  • Major character death, especially where not canonical
  • Terminal or other major illness, particularly cancer
  • Epidemics/pandemics, whether COVID-19 or any sci-fi/fantasy/historical plagues
  • Abuse, particularly between partners
  • Infidelity
  • Incest
  • Rape/non-consensual sex
  • Gore (violence is fine to a canon point, but detailed descriptions of injuries or dead bodies is not)
  • Horror (I have a very low tolerance for creep factor, alas)
  • Porn-specific DNWs: humiliation, kink without appropriate negotiation or aftercare or that is or is implied to be a 24/7 arrangement, daddy kink (or baby kink), a/b/o, bloodplay, watersports.

  • Terminal or other major illness, particularly cancer
  • Epidemics/pandemics, whether COVID-19 or any sci-fi/fantasy/historical plagues
  • Abuse, particularly between partners (several characters I have requested have emotionally and/or physically abusive parents or parental figures, it is fine referencing that abuse, I'd just prefer not to focus on it)
  • Infidelity
  • Incest
  • Rape/non-consensual sex
  • Gore (violence is fine to a canon point, but detailed descriptions of injuries or dead bodies is not)
  • Horror (I have a very low tolerance for creep factor, alas)

Dear Author,

It's Yuletide season once again! Thank you for writing for me, author, first of all--this exchange is always such a good note to end the year on, and I love getting to read about some tiny fandoms. I love all of these fandoms so much, and I am so excited to see what you come up with for wherever we matched.

If you're curious about my taste in stories or other fandoms, I am lady_ragnell on the AO3 and theladyragnell on tumblr!

General Likes and Dislikes

Likes
  • Stories about relationships, whether that means romance, or siblings, or friendships, or rivalries or co-workers. I love seeing characters play off of each other, whether that means reluctantly working together to get over mistrust or falling in love or anything else! And if it involves having some banter, that's always delightful too.
  • Happy or hopeful endings! Angst along the way is just fine by me (I am a huge fan of hurt/comfort, especially with more focus on the comfort than the hurt), but I like everything to be okay in the end.
  • Worldbuilding! I love anything that adds depth to the world of a canon, or explores something canon didn't have the time for. I'm also a huge fan of in-universe media: news articles, pop culture, anything along those lines.
  • I'm also fond of AUs! This year, I'm enjoying the thought of a trip to space, since I've ended up requesting all sci fi, so I'd rather not go for a full setting change unless you've got an idea you can't shake, but canon divergence AUs are always amazing, or AUs that add things to the setting or change people's professions within the setting, etc. are fine.
  • The spaces around canons--things that were implied to happen, or that will likely happen afterwards, but weren't shown in the piece of media. Missing scenes, future fic either about the immediate or long-standing consequences of canon events, or even public perception of canon events. I'm a fan of outsider POV, especially from canon characters.
  • Some of my favorite tropes and story elements include: any and all marriage tropes (arranged, convenient, Vegas, fake), found family, hurt/comfort (especially in survival-type situations), anything about loyalty or fealty, pining, banter, dancing or Fancy Party Episodes, political/court intrigue, and epistolary.
  • Any ratings, G to E! I'm perfectly happy to receive porn, if that's your wheelhouse, and also happy to read gen, or romance where they don't do any more than hold hands, so whatever makes you happy to write, I've got no preferences there! If you do go for porn, though, I would prefer that it be part of the story rather than the whole of the story, and for all characters involved to be older than 18.
  • Other porn likes: characters having fun together during sex, light informal d/s or bondage (especially if partners switch off who's "in charge"), dub-con of the sex pollen type, oral.

Dislikes

My overall guidance is that I'm fine with keeping the tone of and referencing dark things that happen in canon, up to canon-typical levels, but that I'm not very into focusing on those elements or making them any darker, but more specifically, I would prefer not to receive:
  • Character death, particularly through a terminal illness, especially where it's not present in the canon.
  • Major illness in general (with exceptions for canonical character chronic illness or disability): usually this means I'd like to steer clear of fic about characters dealing with cancer, but this being 2020, I would also prefer not to read about COVID-19 or any fantasy/sci-fi/historical plagues.
  • Abuse (emotional or physical, especially between partners), infidelity, incest, non-consensual sex/rape.
  • Gore. I'm fine with violence at a canon level, duel scenes, that kind of thing, but not lingering details of injuries or dead bodies.
  • Horror elements.
  • Porn-specific DNWs: non-con, formal d/s arrangements, a/b/o, bloodplay, watersports.

Dear Author,

First of all, thank you for writing for me! I am always so excited to do this exchange and get to read and write fic for some of my favorite small fandoms, and I always love the results. If you have an idea for one of these canons/sets of characters that you were hoping to write when you offered them, and it's not or not quite among my prompts, please feel free to run with it! Something you enjoy writing is always wonderful.

General Likes and Dislikes

  • Stories about relationships, be they gen or shippy! I love seeing characters interact and play off each other: romances, rivalries, families and found families and friendships and co-working relationships are all amazing for me, particularly if it's about people working together (if sometimes reluctantly). Especially if there's banter involved!
  • Happy endings! I am happy for characters to earn their happiness along the way with angst (I'm always a fan of hurt/comfort), but a happy or hopeful ending is always going to be my preference.
  • Worldbuilding! I love to read fics that explore worldbuilding that's already there more deeply and fics that add lore and depth to canons whose worldbuilding is more glossed over. I love to see in-world pop culture and academia and news articles, and just generally to revel in the worlds of canons I love.
  • I also love AUs. That could mean canon-divergence what-if AUs, a small or large divergence, or setting change AUs. I'm particularly fond of space AUs, the addition of small magical elements in a world that otherwise looks much like canon, and modern AUs where the author gets to use some interest or expertise to flesh out the setting, so if you just read a book about marine biology or know a whole lot about being a summer camp counselor, feel free to make use of it if you'd like. (Note: I tend to be pretty picky about soulmate AUs, so unless you've got an idea you're very attached to there, it wouldn't be my first choice.)
  • Exploration of the spaces around canons: what happened before? What happens after--either immediate aftermath or months or years later? What's public perception of the canon's or fic's events like, or what does an outsider with an intimate view of the events think? (In that last case, I tend to prefer if the outsider POVs are canon characters, but if an OC jumps fully-fleshed-out into your mind, that is also fine.)
  • And I am a sucker for classic tropes: hurt/comfort, fake dating, pretty much any marriage trope you will care to give me (arranged, marriage of convience, waking up married ... I will take it all), huddling for warmth or other survival-type situations. Basically, they are classics for a reason and I am always happy to see them!
  • Any rating, G to E! Don't feel the need to avoid porn or adult subjects, but don't by any means feel pressure to include them either. With porn, I would prefer that any of the underage characters I've requested be overage when any porn takes place, though.
Dislikes

Character death through terminal illness, particularly cancer, is my biggest no, especially where it's not present in the canon. I also prefer not to read character death in general, cancer or other major illness in general even when the character survives it, infidelity, incest, graphic depictions of abuse, non-con, horror-type elements, and gore. My general preference is to acknowledge the darkness of a canon--I definitely don't want things sanitized--but not focus on it or make it darker. I'm not one for Crueltide, basically!

Dear author,

I have loved fairy tales my whole life, and I love doing this fest not least because I get to see all the incredible and interesting takes authors have on the stories I love. So if you are excited about an idea and it's not something I specifically request, please consider this permission to run with it! I'll give plenty of likes and dislikes and prompts down below, but I hope you write something you are excited to write.

General Likes and Dislikes

Likes:

  • I love happy endings, especially for characters who don't always get them because they're written out of the story or because they were villains who didn't (yet) redeem themselves--angst along the way is more than fine, and acknowledging the darkness of fairy tales, but a happy ending when all is done is my biggest love, or a hopeful one, if the story can't get to happy.

  • AUs! Especially for fairy tales, a new setting is always amazing. Space, a specific time period, college, add or subtract some magic, have them meet online, really any new setting makes for a fresh take on a story. I haven't given any specific AU prompts other than a few canon divergences, but you can assume that they are always okay.

  • Relationships--whether friendship or romance or family, what I really love is to see characters caring about each other, or learning to do so, and interacting. Found families are great for me, and teams of people coming together, and of course I'm always here for a good love story, especially if it comes with some pining.

  • Worldbuilding is great--feel free to delve into the worlds around any of these stories, the kingdoms (or space stations, or online forums, or whatever) where they happen, how the magic does or doesn't work, really anything. I am always here for worldbuilding.

  • New perspectives and the spaces around stories--missing scenes, focus on side characters, focus on main characters through a side character's POV, what happens before or during or at the same time.
Dislikes:

  • Terminal illness, particularly of a parent or parental figure. If a character's parents need to die in a story, that's fine, but please don't focus on it.

  • Darkness without hope, or darkness where things only ever get worse instead of better. Fairy tales can get really dark, and I encourage you to explore that, but I like hope and growth and optimism too much to want to do without it.
  • As a general rule, if the following appear in the original tale it is fine to mention them, but I'd rather not have a focus on them: major character death, gore/graphic violence, horror-type elements, infidelity, incest, graphic depictions of abuse, and non-con

A few general notes:

  • If you choose to focus on romance, I don't care if it's f/f, f/m, m/m, or polyamorous, so whatever works for the story and works for you is wonderful for me! If you want to make a princess into a prince or vice versa, that is absolutely fine. Wherever the story takes you!

  • Rating also does not matter to me--I'll take the G-est of G and I'll take E (though for this challenge I love the tales so much that I'd prefer not to have PWP--porn WITH plot is fine, though)

  • Feel free to do fairy tale crossovers--if you want to write a minor character having adventures and you want to steal another tale or a minor character from that tale to do so, that's awesome! If you are writing a minor character having adventures and you make up your own original story for them, that is also amazing!

And now for the tales themselves!

Dear Author,

Another year, another Yuletide! I love this fest, and I love all of these canons very dearly, so I am glad to get to read your work for whichever one you matched me on. If you feel inspired to write something that I don't prompt for, feel free to go in that direction--these prompts are definitely optional, and if you're itching to write something in particular that doesn't hit my DNWs, please do. This letter has turned into a bit of a monster, but I promise that's all enthusiasm and not pressure!

My AO3 is at lady_ragnell and my tumblr at theladyragnell, if you want to find me elsewhere to know more about my taste (though I'll give you both general and fandom-specific likes and dislikes below).

General Likes and Dislikes:

Likes:
  • A focus on relationships--not just romance, but family (or found family) and friendships and even rivalries. I do love romantic fic (especially the pining kind), but I'm just as happy with gen that's about two or more characters interacting, working together, and communicating.
  • Happy endings! I'm happy to have the characters earn a happy ending with angst along the way (I love a good old-fashioned hurt/comfort fic), but I prefer to have things happy or at least hopeful in the end.
  • Worldbuilding--feel free to delve into an interesting location, have the characters interact with some in-world pop culture, and generally play with the worlds the canons give us, because they're all great.
  • Tropes--fake dating, marriage of convenience, huddling for warmth, I'm kind of a sucker for the classics! (Though I am fairly picky about soulmate AUs.)
  • AUs: I love all these canons, but I also like seeing the characters set in new worlds if that's something you're interested in, whether that's a romcom fusion AU, a space AU for a canon not in space, or something completely different. I also particularly like AUs of the canon-divergence "what-if" sort.
  • All ratings! I like G, I like E, I like everything in between, so wherever the story takes you is good with me.
Dislikes:

Character death through terminal illness is my biggest DNW, whether of a minor or major character. I also prefer not to read character death in general, infidelity, incest, graphic depictions of abuse, non-con, horror-type elements, and gore. My general preference is to acknowledge the darkness of a canon--I definitely don't want things sanitized--but not focus on it or make it darker. I'm not one for Crueltide, basically!

Hello, dear author!

I loved doing this fest last year, and am so happy to be doing it again. I am a lover of fairy tales, folktales, and everything else this fest offers, so the first thing I want to tell you is that if you should follow your heart! If you have inspiration for something we matched on that doesn't quite match my prompts, feel free to run with it--I love the tales I'm asking for and want you to love exploring them. But if you want some guidelines, I've got both general likes/dislikes below, as well as prompts for each tale (if you happened to see my letter last year, a lot of things are repeated, so if something seems familiar, that is likely why).

Dear Author,

First of all, thank you for writing for me! I love all these canons and characters, and if you offered them clearly you do too, so regardless of my requests (aside from my hard DNWs, obviously), what I most want is for you to write a story that you love. If there's something not mentioned in my prompts that sparks an idea for you, absolutely go there with my blessing. Optional details are optional, and I want you to have a fun Yuletide experience.

I'm going to give you both general and fandom-specific likes and dislikes, but if you want to know more about me in general, you can find me at lady_ragnell on the AO3 and theladyragnell on tumblr. If you want to know something that neither those links nor the letter provides, samyazaz is a trusted friend and you can ask her if you need to!

General Likes and Dislikes (this section stands from previous letters with only small edits, so if it looks familiar, that is why!)

Likes: HAPPY ENDINGS (you can make the characters earn them with angst along the way, that's fine, I'm all about hurt/comfort, but I like to feel that everything is going to be okay--especially this year, I'm having a bit of a ridiculous few months and some comfort and happiness would be much appreciated), tropes (if you can think of a trope, I probably love it, with an especial fondness for marriage tropes and epistolary, but honestly everything), AUs (again, of all kinds, from setting changes to fusions to canon divergence or close-canon AUs), romance (especially the piney sort) or general focus on friendships and found families and characters caring about each other, worldbuilding, communication

Dislikes: My basic preference is that it's fine to acknowledge the upsetting and dark things that happen in a canon, sanitizing is no one's friend, but making things darker or focusing on the darkness probably won't make me as happy, especially if it comes with an unhappy ending (I'm not your girl for Crueltide, basically, or for horror-related elements). The biggest thing I prefer to avoid is character death through terminal illness, particularly parents, and particularly cancer. If you go the porny route, I would like it to be consensual, but you can go wherever the spirit moves you kink-wise within that!

No impact one way or the other: Some of my requests are going to be shippy, but I want to assure you up front that I am just as happy with gen, because I don't ship characters in general unless I also enjoy their friendship. If you do choose to write a shippy fic, it can be any rating--I'm happy with anything from shy handholding to explicit sex, whatever fits your comfort level and where the story goes works for me.

Fandom-specific thoughts and prompts and such below the cuts! Assume spoilers for each canon.

Dear Author,

When I heard about this fist, I was so excited! I love fairy tales and folktales and all the ways people retell them, so if we match on a story and you get an idea that inspires you, the first thing I want to tell you is that you don't have to match any of my prompts. I'm most going to enjoy reading something that you enjoy writing. But obviously that's not always a helpful thing to say, so here are some general likes and dislikes and some prompts for the specific tales I requested.

  • Fairy tale crossovers--if there's a prompt for a minor character having adventures and you want to steal another tale or a minor character from that tale to do so, that's awesome! If there's a prompt for a minor character having adventures and you make up your own original story for them, that is also amazing!

And now for the tales themselves!

Dear Author,

Thank you so much, first off! I want to tell you up front that I am going to be happiest with a story that you enjoy writing. If my prompts and optional details don't work for you, as long as you avoid my DNWs I will be happy to receive anything in these wonderful canons! Have you been waiting and waiting for a chance to write something I didn't quite prompt here? Go ahead! I am all about that.

If you want to know more about me and my taste in things, you can find me at lady_ragnell on the AO3 and theladyragnell on tumblr. If you've got questions that this letter or those links don't answer for you, samyazaz is a trusted friend who can hopefully help out!

General Likes and Dislikes

Likes: HAPPY ENDINGS (you can make the characters earn them with angst along the way, that's fine, I'm all about hurt/comfort, but I like to feel that everything is going to be okay), tropes (if you can think of a trope, I probably love it, with an especial fondness for marriage tropes and epistolary, but honestly everything), AUs (again, of all kinds, from setting changes to fusions to canon divergence or close-canon AUs), romance (especially the piney sort) or general focus on friendships and found families and characters caring about each other, worldbuilding, communication

Dislikes: My basic preference is that it's fine to acknowledge the upsetting and dark things that happen in a canon, sanitizing is no one's friend, but making things darker or focusing on the darkness probably won't make me as happy, especially if it comes with an unhappy ending (I'm not your girl for Crueltide, basically). The biggest thing I prefer to avoid is character death through terminal illness, particularly cancer. If you go the porny route, I would like it to be consensual, but you can go wherever the spirit moves you kink-wise within that!

Things that will not impact my enjoyment one way or the other, so do whichever YOU will enjoy: whether a fic is gen or shippy (also, I'm going to mention poly a few times, but if that's not what you're into, know that I don't tend to ship people poly unless I ship every ship within it, so if I ask for A/B/C and you're only comfortable with A/C and B along as a friend, that is 100% fine), if there's a crossover (again, my tumblr and AO3 should do a good job of letting you know what canons I'm familiar with), if it's a shippy fic whether there is porn or not

Fandom-specific likes and dislikes are below the cuts!

Dear Author,

First of all, thank you for offering any of these fandoms that we happened to match on! I love all of these canons so much, and I am so excited to see whatever you come up with. If you have an idea for one of them that you've been itching to try, feel free to run with it! A story that you enjoy writing will definitely make me happy, and I get wordy because I love all these canons, but please don't feel pressured to do anything super specific that I happen to toss out there.

This is my second year participating in Yuletide, though I've enjoyed the wealth of things it had to offer for several years. If you want to see what I write to get an idea of what I like to read, here's my AO3 profile. If you want clarification about my likes/dislikes/anything, samyazaz is the person to ask, on her tumblr.

General Likes and Dislikes

Yes Please: Happy endings are definitely my biggest! Happy or hopeful. I don't mind angst for spice in the story, but I like to feel like everyone is going to be okay. I love romance, especially the tropey piney sort (of any rating), but don't feel pressure on that front, I will also happily consume gen. I love worldbuilding, getting to see settings and hinted-at things explored, and the gaps in canons explored as well, what happens before and after and in the spaces in between episodes/seasons/etc. I love ensembles, strong friendships, close relationships, basically people being on each other's side. I love people getting to be competent and creative at what they do. I love hurt/comfort, marriage tropes, pining, humor, epistolary fic, banter, UST, romcoms, get-togethers, and in general, as many tropes as you care to give me. AUs are also great for me! Timeline changes, what-ifs, or full on setting changes are always wonderful, though again, as with romance, please don't feel pressured! I love all of these canons and their settings very much.
*Note: I mention poly in a few of these fandoms. If you aren't comfortable with that, don't worry! I don't tend to ship poly unless I happily ship all the pairings within it, so if I request A/B/C and you only feel comfortable with B/C or A/C, that is 100% fine with me.

No Thank You: Explicit major character death, especially due to terminal illness and specifically cancer, is my biggest thing to avoid. Deaths that have canonically happened are fine to acknowledge, but a fic focusing on them probably won't make me happy. I also prefer not to read: infidelity, incest, non-con, medical horror or experimentation, emotional or physical domestic/partner abuse, or graphic/brutal violence (again, for any of these, if it happened in the canon it's fine to acknowledge it, but I prefer that it not be the focus). If you decide to write porn, as long as there's consent I'm pretty open to wherever the spirit movies you, but I prefer no watersports, bloodplay, or scat.

Dear (Wonderful) Author,

First off, I want to say thank you for writing for me, and thank you SO MUCH for offering any and all of the fandoms we matched on, because they are all dear to my heart. I cannot wait to see what you create. I also want to say that I will probably blather on below, but the blathering is more because I like blathering about my fandoms than because I am expecting anything Super Specific out of you. If you have an idea for one of these fandoms that you want to run with, feel free! A story that you enjoy writing will definitely make me happy.

General Likes and Dislikes

Yes Please: Happy endings are definitely my biggest "yes definitely this"! Happy or at least hopeful. Angst for spice is fine (great, actually!), but overall happiness is where I am at. I'm also a romance addict, so something shippy is also nice, but definitely not required--if you are not into shipping or any ships I mention, I am entirely pleased with the G-est gen. If you do do shipping, any rating at all is fine, and femslash, slash, het, poly, any combination thereof I am totally on board with. I love worldbuilding, getting to see settings and hinted-at things explored, and the gaps in canons explored as well, what happens before and after and in the spaces in between episodes/seasons/etc. I am really fond of AUs, from "what if this tiny thing changed" to "what if they were doing all of this in high school," but I adore all these canons, so again, do not feel pressured to go with an AU. I love ensembles, strong friendships, close relationships, basically people being on each other's side. I love people getting to be competent and creative at what they do. I love hurt/comfort, pining, humor, epistolary fic, banter, UST, romcoms, get-togethers (and first times if you decide to go the porn route), and in general, the tropier the better.

No Thank You: explicit major character death, especially due to cancer or other terminal illness, is my big no. Acknowledging canon character deaths is totally fine, but a fic focused on death will probably not make me happy. I also prefer not to read: infidelity, incest, non-con, emotional or physical domestic/partner abuse (again, for any of these, if it happened in the canon it's fine to acknowledge it, but I prefer that it not be the focus). If you decide to write porn, as long as there's consent I'm pretty open to wherever the spirit movies you, but I prefer no watersports, bloodplay, or scat.

If you have any questions about my likes and dislikes, general or specific, the askbox at my tumblr is always open, anon on, so you or a friend can always ask me. You can also ask Samyazaz, on her tumblr, if you would rather I be more surprised, she has a good idea of my preferences.
